HOW TO FIGHT A TUG OF WAR

Companion Animals

I thought I was just having a fun time with the dogs I walk. Playing tug of war is something that bonds you with your dog and the ones who like it really like it. But it turns out I was probably doing more harm than good.

Playing tug of war requires certain techniques. My client Samantha is a big, strong German shepherd who really can win at the game. So I pulled as hard as I could, lifted her off the ground, and rocked her slowly, best I could, from one side to the other.

Wrong!

Lifting her up off the ground misaligns her neck and spine. Wrong move for your beloved furry friend.

Here are the rules of the game:

  • Tug side-to-side: Move the toy or stick gently from side to side in a windshield-wiper or snake-like motion. Never yank up and down or lift your dog off the ground.
  • Keep all four paws on the ground: Allow your dog to brace himself or herself comfortably while you apply gentle to moderate tension.
  • Use a designated toy: Pick just one specific toy for tug-of-war so your dog learns not to tug on clothes, leashes, or household items. Put the toy away when playtime ends.
  • Match the intensity: Play gently with puppies or senior dogs, and adjust your strength for healthy adult dogs.

How to Start and Stop the Game

  • Establish a start cue: Hold the toy still and ask your dog to “wait” or “leave it”. Once they are calm, give an explicit cue like “Take it!” or “Okay!” to begin.
  • Teach a drop command: Intermittently ask your dog to “Drop it” or “Give”. Reward them with treats, praise, or immediately restarting the tug game so letting go is seen as positive.
  • Control impulse: Periodically pause the game, ask your dog to sit or lie down, and then reward them by letting them grab the toy again.
  • End on a high note: Stop the game briefly before your dog gets over-aroused, ask for a drop, and put the toy away
