The only thing better than a cabin in in the woods is a cabin in the woods with your dog(s) in it.
Many hotels and cottages say they’re pet-friendly, but have size limits, charge fees or otherwise have restrictions. Sometimes “dog-friendly” is really “dog-grudgingly.”
Secluded and off-the-beaten-path, with amenities just for pups, The cabins we’ve listed below are more than pet-friendly – they’re pet-centric, meaning the animal takes center stage and the accommodations and experience are built around him or her. The cabins all have fenced yards and play areas, special amenities like food, bowls, even pet photography.
We’ve listed four well-established cabin lodgings here, but there are listings on Airbnb and Vrbo, for example, for vacation rental cabins that welcome dogs, too.
Barkwells (pictured above) in North Carolina offers a unique, dog-centric place to run, swim, and play with your four-legged friends. Fully furnished, and equipped vacation home accommodations with private hot tubs and fireplaces in a low-density, gated community create a haven for like-minded dog lovers in a safe environment on acres of fenced meadows with a pond. The properties are equipped with flotation vests for your pooch, poop bag stations and dog-washing facilities.
Asheville Area Vacation Cabins: Offer a gated, covered deck and acres of meadows. Eight cozy, comfy cabins with private yards and hot tubs.
Brevard Area Vacation Cottages: All the amenities of the original Asheville property in two lucury cottages: a fenced perimeter, electronic gates, meadows for running, and ponds for swimming. Just 15 minutes from Dupont State Forest, Pisgah National Forest, and downtown Brevard. Expansive meadow and mountain views, a fenced yard with a dog door, and ponds outside your doorstep. The extra added attraction here is miniature donkeys! (Fully fenced, of course.)
They fill up quickly, so plan ahead or hope for a cancellation.
Paw House Inn in Vermont doesn’t just cater to dogs –if you don’t bring a dog there’s a $10 fee. The inn opened in 2001, after the owners were frustrated about finding dog-centric travel destinations entirely for dog lovers. They left their NYC jobs, packed up their two “goofy” labs, disregarded everyone’s warnings, and created Paw House in the Killington area of Vermont.
Paw House offers guest rooms and suites, country cottages with custom dog beds, homemade welcome treats, and dog-friendly dining areas. The property includes a huge dog park, dog agility courses, an on-site dog facility, dog walking and care. There’s a vet tech on staff and a dog-washing station.
Shiny Apple Cabins in Blue Ridge, Georgia, promises “Your dogs will have a better stay than you.” Features two “pet-devoted” cabins, one with mountain and another with creekside views. Amenities for people and their companion animals: laundry room; game room; a gated deck and fully-fenced yard; up to four dogs welcome (no breed or size restrictions); extra sanitation and cleaning provided for every stay; dog hammock; two large (36 inch) crates with mat/blanket; dog bed, dog towels, blankets and flat sheets;; two outdoor water hydrants for drinking or bathing dogs; dog bowls, dining mats, leash hooks, poop bags, and homemade dog treats more; first aid kit for dogs; calming care tools and resources for dogs. There’s also a Dog Rock Garden where you can paint your pup to add to the cabin’s collection.
Optional perks (additional fee) include exclusive access to Blue Ridge Private Dog Park for your entire stay — just you and your pups; dog photography session; pet sitting; and poop-scooping;
Sliding Rock Cabins, opened in 2001 in the North Georgia region, bills itself as The Pet Friendliest Cabin Company in the Whole Universe. They even have cat cabins. Accommodations range from one to five bedrooms, some with mountain and others with lakefront views. Pet amenities include: dog beds, bowls, treats, toys, blankets and towels for muddy paws. Many cabins feature fenced yards or gated decks
