Jason Hawkins spends most of his time hiking. But one day, hiking through the woods in Umpqua Hot Springs, Oregon, was not your average walk in the woods.
Hawkins spotted a small, shaking pup off the trail deep in the woods. The chihuahua was sitting motionless, watching him. Lost.
Hawkins tried to approach, but every step scared the animal deeper into the woods. He wanted to help, but the dog would not let Hawkins pick him up. He had no leash, no rope, no treats. But he couldn’t let the scared little thing just sit there. He couldn’t leave the dog alone.
Then Hawkins, a YouTuber, remembered he had a tripod with a clip on the end of it. He got it clipped to the dog’s collar and the two walked out of the woods. The collar had a tag with a phone number, and Hawkins was able to get in touch with the dog’s people.
The woman showed up soon after, and she explained, with tears in her eyes, that the dog had jumped out of their car hours earlier and disappeared into the forest.
Thank goodness the good-hearted Hawkins was there to be a hero for this lucky pup.
Know someone who’s a hero for animals? We would love to hear their story. E-mail: jill@humane-beings.com.
