LONG-LASTING LOVE

Companion Animals

However long they live, we never have enough time with our dogs. But some dog types and breeds do live longer than others,

Small dog breeds generally live the longest, with lifespans often reaching 15–20 years. Top contenders include the Chihuahua (14–20+ years), Coton de Tulear (15–19 years), Toy Poodle (10–18 years), and Jack Russell Terrier (16–18 years). Other long-lived breeds include the Lancashire Heeler, Shih Tzu and Australian Cattle Dog.

While these breeds are known for longevity, individual health is highly dependent on genetics and care. Mixes in general have “hybrid vigor,” which improves the performance of offspring by crossing genetically diverse parents, leading to increased fertility, faster growth rates, better health and higher survival rates.

Key Factors for Longevity

Size: Smaller dogs have slower metabolisms, lower body stress and slower aging, contributing to longer lives.
Breed: Smaller versions of breeds, like mini schnauzers and toy poodles; and terrier-types generally are hardier and live longer.
Care: Healthy weight, daily exercise and regular veterinary care are critical to maximizing a dog’s lifespan.
