Well, I thought my husband and I were the only ones who called them “Frito feet.” Turns out they’re a thing. It’s an odor on dogs — and more faintly in cats — that smells like the actual corn chips, and if you have a dog you know what I mean.
It’s a normal phenomenon caused by harmless bacteria mixing with natural sweat from their paw pads and yeast on their skin. Dogs and cats sweat through their paw pads. The warm, tight space between toes lets microbes grow. And dogs add more moisture when they groom their feet.
You only need to worry when a there’s a very sharp or foul smell, which can mean an infection. Excessive licking can mean the paws itch or hurt, or the dog is nervous. If you notice any redness, swelling or heavy licking, get in touch with your vet.
