Nikos Tsikalakis has spent most of his life helping animals and giving shelter to dogs in Crete, Greece.
Though his home was little more than a tent, he began picking up stray and abandoned dogs, which was not all that common for the culture of Crete.
Nikos gave up everything for his dogs, and started Bronx Familia Animal Shelter 13 years ago. He lives in a small container on the shelter grounds, with a broken bathroom floor, minimal cooking facilities and, often, not have hot water to take a shower.Yet he makes sure the dogs live “like kings and queens.”
He currently is taking care of 300 dogs, each with his or her own story. He gave them a place to call home, and they gave him more love in return than he could ever imagine.
”I am not an educated person by paper, I never went to school,” says Niko, a true hero for animals, “but my dogs have taught me more about life than I could ever read in a book.”
