Animals continue to suffer in laboratories despite the availability of modern, proven, human-relevant research methods.
Right now, more than a thousand concerned animal welfare participants are walking 207 miles to protest this outdated practice during the March to Abolish Animal Testing. The march kicked off Sept. 12 in Albany, the capital of New York and home to legislators who can stop animal cruelty, and ends Sept. 26 at Marshall BioResources in North Rose, N.Y., which breeds up to 20,000 beagles for animal testing.
Marshall is the largest breeder of beagles for laboratory experimentation in the country, and also a major supplier of cats, ferrets, pigs and other animals to labs. Starting the march in the capital and ending at Marshall connects the seat of political power to the source of the harm.
The organizers say this will be the largest, most visible anti-animal experimentation campaign in modern history.
You can still join the march – the route is outlined on the MAAT website. Vegan snacks and services will be provided along the walk, which averages about 15 miles a day.
