It’s the cutest thing. I call it head cockable – when dogs tilt their heads, usually when you’re talking to them.
Scientists have found three key reasons:
- Better Hearing: Tilting adjusts the outer ear flaps, helping them pinpoint where a noise or high-pitched sound comes from.
- Clearer Vision: Moving the head helps clear their field of view if a long snout blocks their sight of your face.
- Processing Speech: Dogs often tilt when hearing meaningful or familiar words like “treat” or “walk” as their brains concentrate.
- Learned Behavior: They learn that tilting makes humans smile, talk softly or give treats, so they do it more.
It’s not cute if your dog keeps his head tilted all the time, shows signs of dizziness, falling over or scratches his ears a lot. Then head-tilting can be a sign of an ear infection or a balance issue. In these cases, contact a veterinarian.
