AFRICAN GREY MATTER

Amazing Animals

The most intelligent pet? It doesn’t have four feet, but two – and feathers.

A Harvard University study found that the African Grey can perform some cognitive tasks at levels beyond those of 5-year-old humans.

Amazing Aspects of African Grey Intelligence

  • Cognitive Abilities: Studies, famously by Dr. Irene Pepperberg (shown above), a research associate in Harvard’s Psychology Department, with her parrot Alex for 30 years, show that African Greys can identify, request, refuse and categorize more than 80 objects, as well as understand concepts like “none.”
  • Language and Understanding: They do not merely mimic; they can hold contextual conversations and use words appropriately. Alex was known to ask questions about objects, such as “What color?”
  • Problem-Solving: They possess deductive reasoning skills, often used to determine the location of hidden rewards and can work through complex puzzles.
  • Emotional and Mental Needs: Known for their high emotional intelligence, they require constant mental stimulation to avoid boredom and destructive behaviors, such as feather-plucking.
  • Humanlike Interaction: They can mimic human voice, tone and pitch, making them exceptional talkers.

Here are four other species remarkable for their intelligence:

  1. Chimpanzees: Known for displaying emotions like empathy and regret, using tools, having long-term memories, recognizing themselves in mirrors, identifying colors, shapes and objects and even using sign language to communicate with humans.
  2. Pigs: Social creatures with long-term memories, capable of recognizing other pigs and humans, even manipulating other pigs.
  3. Dogs. Most dogs quickly understand housebreaking, basic commands and house rules. The border collie is often cited as one of the smartest breeds. They excel as herding dogs, follow numerous verbal and hand commands and understand more words than most other dog breeds.
  4. Rats and mice: They are social and intelligent animals. They can be trained to perform tricks, solve puzzles and respond to their names. They are naturally curious and have strong memories.
