Italy has formally recognized caring for a seriously ill pet as a valid reason for paid emergency leave. Under this progressive policy, employees can take up to three days of paid leave per year to care for an ailing companion animal.
Pet emergencies are now classified under “serious personal or family reasons” in the national labor framework.
Key Requirements & Details
To qualify and ensure the policy is used for legitimate emergencies rather than convenience, specific rules apply:
- Microchip Rule: The dog, cat or other pet must be officially registered and microchipped.
- Veterinary Certification: You must provide a formal certificate from a registered veterinarian confirming the illness is a true emergency that requires your presence at home.
- Legal Precedent: This policy is tied to Italy’s strict animal welfare laws. The courts successfully argued that since leaving an animal to suffer unattended is a crime, a pet owner’s legal and moral obligation to care for their pet must be accommodated under labor laws.
