The Kauai Humane Society offers a Shelter Dog Field Trip Program that lets you see the beauty of the Hawaiian island while getting a dog fix and giving a shelter dog a break from the kennels.
You can romp on the beach, hike through Kauai’s unbelievable scenery, take a drive or just cuddle while making a difference in a rescue dog’s life. Spending time outdoors with the pup helps him or her build confidence, practice social skills and often makes them more adoptable (there have, of course, been examples of dogs being adopted by their human companions right then and there – after all that bonding, it’s gotta be hard to resist).
Important, too, for the shelter is learning more about the dog’s natural behavior outside of the shelter.
It’s a win-win, and a meaningful way to give for animal-loving travelers. You’ll need to schedule in advance and fill out paperwork.
