THE SINGING SENSATION

Amazing Animals

We had a mockingbird living in a tree right near our bedroom window. They can sing all day and all night, and we used to wake up in the middle of the night and just listen to them. Mockingbirds are renowned for their incredible vocal mimicry, capable of learning hundreds of songs, including calls of other birds, animals and man-made sounds like sirens.

  • A single male can learn over 200 distinct types of songs during his life. They have been known to mimic frogs, crickets, pianos, and sirens.
  • Their songs change from season to season; 99% of the songs sung in spring are different from those in the fall, according to Wild Birds Unlimited.
  • During the spring mating season, males sing 24/7 to attract mates.
  • Another interesting adaptation is known as “wing flashing” — while hunting on the ground, they frequently open their wings in a jerky motion to display white patches, which likely startles insects into moving.
  • They are highly territorial and have been known to dive-bomb cats, dogs and humans that get too close to their nests.
  • The Northern Mockingbird is so iconic and omnipresent it is the official bird of five states: Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi and Texas.
  • In the 1800s, they were so popular as pets that they were nearly trapped to extinction in some eastern American cities
  • The oldest wild Northern Mockingbird on record lived to be almost 15 years old
